Our History

From day one, our mission has been simple: create a positive impact in the lives of others — starting with our employees and extending to the customers and communities we serve.

Chesapeake was founded on April 28, 2003, by Jessie and Travis Martin with one truck and one employee. Through grit, determination, and a commitment to doing things the right way, the company quickly established itself in the fast-paced world of volume housing construction.

When the housing market collapsed in 2008, we faced one of the toughest seasons in our history. Like many in our industry, we were hit hard. But through perseverance, adaptability, and an unwavering work ethic, we weathered the storm without bankruptcy or restructuring. We took on work wherever we could find it — inside and outside our core market — determined to protect what we had built.

By 2011, as the market stabilized, we found ourselves in a “last man standing” position. With renewed opportunity came renewed growth. From that point forward, we expanded not just in size, but in vision.

Over the years, other like-minded leaders in the construction and service industries joined us, drawn to the culture and reputation behind the Chesapeake name. What began as a single company evolved into a family of companies operating under the Chesapeake Brand:

In 2014 we made the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest growing companies in the nation, and we’ve been on the list every year since then. We’re also a BBB-accredited business with a 4.9 Google review rating. We have numerous recognitions and accolades, including being named one of the Top Workplaces in 2025 by The Baltimore Sun. We also achieved this recognition in the past years, both 2023 and 2022.

We didn’t do all this hard work alone.
